Why your dog barks?
Dog barks for a variety of reasons. It is natural for them to bark but sometimes their unneccesary barking becomes nuisance to others, therefore causing a problem for their owners. Know why your dog barks, and take the necessary measures to lessen excessive barking and stop the unnecessary. |
Reasons for Barking
1. To alert or warn
Owners encourage their dogs to bark to alert them of danger or warn the presence of a stranger. Aggressive barks are low in pitch and may be combined with growls. It is important for owners to distinguish the difference between alerting/warning barks from barks out of fear because you wouldn't want to correct your dog for the wrong reason.
2. To get attention
Most puppies and even older dogs would bark just to grab their master's attention. They seek your time and affection and will not stop until you heed them.
3. To show excitement
Playing with your dog outdoors excites him specially if the games start to become more active and playful that is why he lets out short and sharp barks.
4. To self identify
Dogs bark when they hear other dogs barking.
5. To have an outlet of energy
Dogs that do this are referred to as bored barkers. Some dogs have a lot of energy for activities but are not given the chance to make use of that, so they try to find an outlet for their energy by continuous barking.
6. To show he's upset.
Dogs that are often left alone or outside the house tends to experience separation anxiety. He longs fot attention and affection that's why he barks excessively and the pitch becomes higher as he gets more upset. This type of barking can be especially annoying to your neighbors.
The goal for all dog owners is to teach their dog not to bark for no reason and if traditional methods won't work anymore, anti barking collars can be your best tool.
Some dog bark collars are rechargeable, some are waterproof, etc. Below we review the various anti barking collars. Most of the quality dog bark colars offered today are offered by either Innotek or PetSafe. The Innotek dog bark colars are advanced correction and behavior modification collars. The PetSafe dog bark colars are correction only.
Besides dog bark collars, some companies still offer bark collars which use ultrasound to control the dogs barking. Collars or devices which emit ultrasound are not specific. Although the ultrasound will be heard by the barking dog, so will it be heard by all other pets in the home, which were not barking! Ultrasound collars are still available, but many retailers are fazing them out because the dog bark colars are much more effective. For many retailers the ultrasonic collars, because of their relative poor success rate have resulted in a high return rate. So the retailers are no longer offering ultrasonic collars.
There are also citronella collars available. This does sound strange, but they are available. Basically a reservoir filled with citronella is placed on the front of the collar. When the dog barks a citronella spray is projected through a tube toward the dogs nose and face. The harsh chemical serves as a correction when a dog barks. These collars can break, are not small for little dogs, and require repeated refills of citronella. Do they work, probably not. But even if they did work, it is a complicated system spraying a noxious chemical which some say does not hurt a dog. If you can believe that and can bring yourself to spray citronella into your face, then consider using it for your dog.
How It Works
The Bark Collars are training devices that help reduce nuisance barking. There are two key features of the Anti Barking Collars. The first is a mild warning sensation triggered by your dog’s first bark. The second feature occurs when your dog barks again within 30 seconds of the first bark. This will be the first and lowest level of correction. There are a total of 6 levels of correction that are triggered by your dog’s successive barks. Each successive bark will increase the correction level if the bark is within 30 seconds of the previous bark. If your dog does not bark for at least 30 seconds the receiver resets itself. Along with each correction there will be an audible beep. As a built-in safety feature, when your dog barks 15 times or more in a 50 second period the collar will automatically shut off for a period of 3 minutes.
